Description

A rich and hearty Italian meat sauce simmered to perfection, combining ground beef with aromatic vegetables, tomatoes, and a splash of red wine. Ideal for pairing with pasta or layering in lasagna.

Ingredients

  • 9 oz (255 g) lean ground beef

  • 1 cup grated carrot

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1/2 cup dry red wine

  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup beef broth

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.

  • Add chopped onion and grated carrot, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.

  • Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  • Increase heat to medium-high and add ground beef, cooking until browned and crumbled.

  • Stir in red wine, allowing it to reduce for 2-3 minutes.

  • Add crushed tomatoes, beef broth, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper.

  • Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Notes

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of milk or cream towards the end of cooking.

This sauce can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
