Description

Juicy, seasoned chicken paired with sautéed onions and bell peppers, all melted together under a blanket of provolone cheese in a toasted hoagie roll. A lighter twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak that’s both satisfying and full of flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp oil (or mayonnaise)

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp dried oregano

  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • 1 tbsp oil (for cooking)

  • 1 onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced

  • ½ tbsp soy sauce (optional; use tamari for gluten-free)

  • ½ tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional; ensure gluten-free version for GF diet)

  • 4 slices provolone cheese

  • 4 hoagie rolls or gluten-free rolls, halved and optionally toasted

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the sliced chicken with oil (or mayonnaise), garlic powder, oregano, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Let it marinate for at least 20 minutes.

  2. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and bell pepper. Sauté until softened and slightly caramelized, about 5 minutes.

  4. Return the chicken to the skillet with the vegetables. Add soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to combine.

  5. Place the provolone slices over the chicken and vegetable mixture. Cover the skillet to melt the cheese, about 2 minutes.

  6. While the cheese melts, toast the hoagie rolls in a separate pan or under a broiler until golden brown.Northern Yum

  7. Assemble the sandwiches by spooning the chicken and vegetable mixture into the toasted rolls. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a spicier kick, increase the amount of cayenne pepper or add a few dashes of hot sauce.

If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute mayonnaise for the oil in the marinade.

For a gluten-free version, ensure all sauces are gluten-free and use gluten-free rolls.
