Description
Juicy, seasoned chicken paired with sautéed onions and bell peppers, all melted together under a blanket of provolone cheese in a toasted hoagie roll. A lighter twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak that’s both satisfying and full of flavor.
Ingredients
-
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, thinly sliced
-
2 tbsp oil (or mayonnaise)
-
1 tsp garlic powder
-
½ tsp dried oregano
-
½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
-
½ tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
1 tbsp oil (for cooking)
-
1 onion, thinly sliced
-
1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
-
½ tbsp soy sauce (optional; use tamari for gluten-free)
-
½ tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional; ensure gluten-free version for GF diet)
-
4 slices provolone cheese
-
4 hoagie rolls or gluten-free rolls, halved and optionally toasted
Instructions
-
In a bowl, combine the sliced chicken with oil (or mayonnaise), garlic powder, oregano, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Let it marinate for at least 20 minutes.
-
Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
-
Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and bell pepper. Sauté until softened and slightly caramelized, about 5 minutes.
-
Return the chicken to the skillet with the vegetables. Add soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to combine.
-
Place the provolone slices over the chicken and vegetable mixture. Cover the skillet to melt the cheese, about 2 minutes.
-
While the cheese melts, toast the hoagie rolls in a separate pan or under a broiler until golden brown.Northern Yum
-
Assemble the sandwiches by spooning the chicken and vegetable mixture into the toasted rolls. Serve immediately.
Notes
For a spicier kick, increase the amount of cayenne pepper or add a few dashes of hot sauce.
If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute mayonnaise for the oil in the marinade.
For a gluten-free version, ensure all sauces are gluten-free and use gluten-free rolls.
